Little Miss Carriage 2021

Oh, sweet little one,

The one that got away.

A lonesome gathering of black balloons struggles to lift to the skies, appearing to pace back and forth as they constantly dip up and down. There is a seemingly monotony to this struggle, a resolution that seems close and yet so far. The balloons are hoisted by a black ribbon on which the artist seems to have painstakingly embroidered the words: little miss carriage. This video performance is the artist’s personal monologue with the act of grieving; the title and its clever yet grim play with words gives the audience a brief glimpse to the subject of mourning.

Aside from the balloons, there is a colourful pool and playground visible in the background, evoking a future that was never meant to pass. These are real material objects that further enhance immaterial grief and the sense of loss that cannot be quantified.

It must be acknowledged that loss is inevitable and sooner or later, we are bound to lose the ones who hold closest to our hearts. But this acknowledgement does not make the process of grieving, and then slowing letting go of the person any easier. As the staggering balloons and their struggle to lift up fails, it is clear that the artist herself has not been able to move on.
