Butter Me Up 2023

This performance project titled “Butter me up” is an interrogation into the concept of leisure and its intersection with indulgence and self-pleasure, deliberating on what it means to South-Asian homemakers. The artist will sit on a bed constructed from butter, draped over by sugar, in the middle of Manhattan, bringing the intimate bedroom space to the streets, distorting the binary between private and public spaces. As the butter slowly melts all over the artist’s body, she will reclaim the indulgence and self-pleasure that is denied to homemakers who are stuck in a perpetual Sisyphean cycle of gendered labour.
